Terrence
McCraw - TMc is a 58 year "hopeless
romantic.." with a creative eye and a zest for capturing
images and presenting them in unique and different ways.
They say the "one picture tells a thousand words.." Then I am
truly a Photographic Story Teller.About the TMc
logo. Photography for me is a second profession. I
came out of the "corporate environment" where I used to
read a lot of correspondence everyday. When done I would
initial the page before filing. That "initial" the TMc
is now how I sign my portraits!
For 25 years photography was be my "paying" hobby.
Today it is my primary profession. I opened my first
studio at 212 W. Main St. downtown Visalia. Two years
later I moved my operations to 411 W. Main St. where I stayed
for another 8 years. Today I am where I remain, at 111 W.
Main St. in the heart of downtown Visalia, CA.
I have studied photography all of my adult life. But my
greatest mentors are:
- Leon Kennamer for teaching me to really "see.."
the light
- Tibor Horvath for teaching me how and where, to apply "softness.."
to my images
- Don Blair for proper posing of the "female.." form
- Monte Zucker for fantastic portrait style
- David Ziser for helping me develop my compositional eye
- Ed Pierce for sequencing techniques
A couple of thoughts on today's imaging. I am now an
ALL DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT. I haven't shot film in more than
3 years.
Like many professions our tools and techniques continue to
evolve. With the advent of "digital.." cameras our world
was turned upside down. Many embraced the change from film
to digital. Many did not. Anyone who understands our craft
will tell you that "digital imaging " is a "light year "
leap in our never ending pursuit of capturing what the
human eye can see and freezing forever that moment in time
...for all to see.
Most folks remember the great photographer Ansel Adams.
He was a good photographer. but better yet, he knew the
limitations of his tools. He knew the limitations of film
and it's inabilities to capture all of what his eye could see,
and even worse the inability of getting that image from film to
paper. With those handicaps he still had "vision" and
could see the finished image in his head. He was an absolute
master in his darkroom where he manipulated and finished his
images
With digital, we capture images in "raw" files (like exposed,
but unprocessed film..) which are then processed and manipulated
in my computer workstation (my darkroom), then uploaded via the
Internet to my local lab who produces wallets to 11x14" prints
within 4 hours. Wall portraits up to 30x40" are up loaded
to my lab in Colombia, Mo. and delivered via FEDEX in 3 working
days With film that process would take 3 weeks!
So the change was good!
